Hi Fives!

In Democratic Debate, Hillary Clinton Paints Bernie Sanders’s Plans as Unrealistic – The New York Times http://nyti.ms/1R0oOln

Walter, you’ve made an exceptional point. The single thing I found lacking in last night’s debate was Inspiration…We know the candidates’ positions; retreading the same ground would give the impression that anyone is a single-issue candidate. We need now to move these debates toward a dialogue with the country regarding an achievable, inspiring agenda…something we all can share and rally around. Your referenced article is a good start toward a positive and productive discussion.

A Safer World, Thanks to the Iran Deal – The New York Times http://nyti.ms/1RxxX7A

Thank you for another beautifully written comment, Walter Rhett. I agree that the story of the Iran deal reads like a parable of President Obama and his opponents.

Diplomacy leads to thorough, long term victories and lasting peace, unlike war, which means wanton death and destruction and creates even more problems. Diplomacy means compromise, working behind the scenes, long term commitment, dropping the propaganda, treating the “other” as an equal.

The Real Problem With Lunch – The New York Times http://nyti.ms/1OoWk3O   Jan. 16, 2016.

~~Wonderful post, especially the observation that lunchtime was more than a pit stop for refueling.

~~Lovely!

~~I love this.

~~What a beautiful remembrance!

~~The pleasure you got from those meals is evident and beautiful. My mother still raves about the homemade bread that her public, small-town, Tennessee lunch ladies made. I agree that in addition to nutrition, Mrs. Lucy and others like her taught children love, respect, and pride in a job well done. Bring back school kitchens!

~~your story takes me back to my childhood – we were relatively well-off, but one friend was poor with a single mother and lived in a ramshackle house with dirt back yard – but I’d go around there and she’d have a fresh hot hi-top loaf of bread from the local baker – it would burn my hand if I put it inside – she’d slather slices of that with golden cane syrup and I thought it was the best thing in the world.

~~Really beautiful. I hope Mrs. Lucy understood how appreciated she was.

The Hear-Nothing Gun Crowd – The New York Times http://nyti.ms/1TLr54d (for the comment replies below.)

~~Beautifully written, Walter. Sadly, the people who need to read and comprehend this won’t.

~~Walter Rhett….your eloquent description of America brings to mind all the unnecessary deaths that have occurred in my lifetime in the United States as a result of unnecessary wars and a violent gun culture.

~~Very well stated, Walter Rhett.

Thank you Walter.
I enjoyed the Collins spin on the Trump narrative, it is the the cooling that is keeping the pot from boiling over but I think you have really defined the situation with wit and wisdom.

Mr. Rhett, I have read your insightful comments with interest over the years, and your wisdom never disappoints. Just a heartfelt thank you from one fellow traveler to another.

Well stated. Just as there is the thin blue line between order and anarchy, there is the thin line of law enforcement oversight between order and a police state.

Ever since 9/11, we have diminished so many of our freedoms and civil rights in order to be secure. In the process, we’ve enabled a hyper-driven police mentality to infiltrate every level of our government. It is time to reverse the trend and bring order to the police.  03/31/15

@Walter Rhett: ‘Destroyer clowns’ sums up the Republican quite nicely. It’s the truth. They want to destroy. That’s all they want. You nailed it.

Yours is a clear and beautifully written post. ” That from the heartless, still hot ashes of hate, fear and blame………….” You summed up the pain and frustration that many of us have had to cope with as we take in the political news of recent times.

Thank you for for putting your well crafted words out there. 4/27/15.

walterrhett, Very good work. Thank you. 2/28/15

@walterhett: Thanks, Walter! You explain the phenomenon quite well, in a manner I can grasp. 2/24/15

Amen, Walter! in fact, it seems a lot of folks don’t even get some of his humor. Say, maybe HE could take over for Jon Stewart! 2/19/15

Very, very good. Chock full of social comment.

The most articulate response to the threat of terrorism I’ve read in the NYTimes.

Today instead of news, we get styles. There’s a British style (combative competitors), American (gaffes/gotcha), network (sensational).

So true.

Three, from a Frank Bruni column:

You sir, have an incredible gift for making the most sordid worthy of a search for understanding. It’s a talent I admire, really.

Excellent, Walter, just excellent.

Nicely done!

You keep fighting Walter. This white guy loves your comments, learns from your lessons, and admires your courage and thoughtfulness.

Well said, Walter.

Beautiful writing today Mr. Rhett!

Next two comments appeared in the NYTimes, in response to a comment on a Gail Collins column:

Mr. Rhett, that was a good and interesting read (both your comments and your link) I hope others decide to check it out.

@walterrhett
So much of what I’ve read, since C. Caldwell’s loathsome meditation on the ‘treason’ of Bradley Manning in the Weekend edition of The Financial Times, has been framed as condemnation of whistle-blowers, as ‘narcissists’, ‘traitors’, ‘criminals’ and other politically serviceable cliches, attuned to the dismal Politics of the Present. In your essay in it’s beautiful cadences, deeply thought out metaphors, and it’s intellectual/historical sophistication, you bring an ethical/political mastery, missing from all I’ve read and listened to in the last week. Your essay brought clarity and a kind of intellectual refreshment to the conundrum of Mr. Snowden, but more importantly a stimulus, a challenge to further thought, after the rabble rousing of the usual pack of dogs, known as pundits.

@walterrhett Walter your OVERWHELMED/ DIGGING DEEPER written4-24-13 was incredibly moving to me! Your analysis was profound, & I copied

Your analysis is brilliant and heartfelt.
So what is the way to the light? How does the family of man heal?
These questions are timeless.
