Not one of the Republican candidates who declared, withdrew, or remain in the race possess the will or vision to accomplish this complex landmark accord–shown in their withering reactions to its initiatives and success.
Contrasts are in order: Barack Obama lead the UN Security Council permanent members, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, with Germany and the European Union to a historic agreement! It shut down 12,000 nuclear centrifuges, poured concrete into the core of an Iranian plutonium reactor, and shipped 8.5 tons of enriched uranium out of Iran, verified by unprecedented access by the International Atomic Agency which certified the conditions placed on Iran had been met. This accord was transacted as US sanctions against Russia for its Crimea activities remained in place, and as the US began exporting oil and gas to international markets (a tankers is steaming from Corpus Christi on the way to Bavaria!), directly into the heart of Russia’s monopoly energy markets, its principal source of revenue. Literally overnight, without a shot, in the case of the 10 US sailors, the US turned a hardened adversary into a negotiating partner.
Not one of the Republican candidates who declared, withdrew, or remain in the race possess the will or vision to accomplish this complex landmark accord–shown in their withering reactions to its initiatives and success. One evaluates foes by saying, “he’s a nasty guy; nobody likes him.” Others wrap themselves in the flag with bellicose quarrels. But they are silent as Michigan’s GOP administration serves Flint the high leaded kool-aid. If GOP voters are not, the world is watching this group with diminished expectations.

~~And religion. Don’t forget that, Walter. They wrap themselves in their religious coat, as Marco Rubio did in his latest video, as Ted Cruz does constantly, as John Kasich does (he says we need a Judeo-Christian ‘Voice of America’ targeting the Middle East!!), Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum (yes, they’re still running), Rick Perry, Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal (‘suspended’ campaigns), Jeb! (almost forgot Jeb!) and, of course, that sincerely religious Republican leader, Donald Trump.
I’m sick to death of these people using their god this way. The Founders knew to survive we had to move away from the European model and all their religious wars and discrimination and state religions. They had the wisdom to do the absolutely right thing. Now all these clowns say the Founders didn’t mean we have freedom FROM religion, only freedom OF religion!! I guess we’re all supposed to pick one – and guess which one will be the only ‘acceptable’ one. We are NOT a Theocracy, no matter what Ted Cruz and his crazy Dominionist father and followers do or say in trying to make us one. These people want power over all of us. They are serious. They are scary (I am much more frightened of Ted Cruz and how he can affect my life than I am of ISIS). And they must be stopped.
~~But this is yet another example of Republicans claiming that up is down and being completely unhinged from reality.
Each of these candidates has claimed at some point that the Iran deal was disastrous and will lead to an apocalypse (many of them have even used the word “apocalypse.”). In their bizarro world, having Iran agree to dismantle their nuclear weapons program is allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons. For them, war is the only acceptable solution; military action is not only the appropriate response to every foreign policy dilemma, but the ONLY appropriate response. They see diplomacy as weakness, and negotiating with the Iranians as “treason.”
~~Mr. Rhett, brilliantly stated. I live in Manhattan, supposedly very liberal, and most people I know think the Iran deal makes the US weak. Lack of information, even amongst the well educated, is frighteningly abundant.
