Charles F. Harris, 81, Dies; Led Effort to Publish Work by Black Writers – The New York Times



Charles F. Harris, an editor and publisher who pushed commercial and academic presses to embrace black writers, explore black issues and court black readers, died on Dec. 16 in Manhattan. He was 81.
He spent much of his career chipping away at the prevailing notion in the industry that writing by black authors or aimed at black readers belonged to a niche market.
