Thinking about MLK “Black is beautiful”, and rereading chapter 42 of Moby Dick,”The Whiteness of the Whale.” (on Google) Melville goes into the archetypes of “black” and “white”, first giving everyman Ishmael’s everyman opinion, then giving us a startling transformation by the end of the chapter to an epiphany about the demonic side of the archetype of whiteness. Published in the decade before the Civil War, it seems relevant right now.

    ,”S/He walks in beauty like the night of cloudless climes of starry skies. And all that’s best in dark and bright meet in his/her eyes.
    It makes me think of dark faces, long ago, telling me stories by firelight.
