Blinded By Plain Sight

Ahh, Prof. Krugman presents a rare case of clarity that uses conventional numbers to focus on a problem the politicians and commentators have avoided. Its accuracy can be measured by the primal screams ringing in tomorrow’s blogs.

The political culture became so wrapped up in seeing the problem, fighting over its turf, fixing the formulas to solve it, until the necessary question was buried along with the answer. What happens to the budget if the prolonged recession ended? Of course who else has pointed out the loopy logic of saving future cuts by making future cuts!

The real indictment is that the answers and logic Prof. Krugman puts forth was hidden in plain sight. Consumed by ideology, none are so blind as those who will not see.

I hope the President has Mr Krugman over for chats or lunch this term, takes in a little more of his economic world view now that Wall Street isn’t top dog at Treasury. But yes, our genius Congress will go on fighting turf and ideology wars long after an issue has relevance, see their desperate attempt to smear Obama with Benghazi pre-election. Some die-hards still rankling, but they didn’t want to wait for official investigation! While thousands of our servicemen + women gone in Iraq, Afganistan w/o full investigations or even explanations til forced (Pat Tillman). The more things change etc.. But Obama’s confidence and political capital is STRONG right now! This term will be different. He’s not going to be as accommodating as he tried to be and thank the heavens! The opposition knows the people are behind him and he finally is able to use that power! So glad we have NYT and gems like Krugman to point out the obvious from view of someone really knowing Econ, busting myths… I have so much hope for this term (mingled with concern for Obama’s safety, as bad as last inauguration but with more assault weapons involved. God bless the Secret Service! Here’s to this wonderful weekend of MLK and 2nd term inauguration. Hallelujah.
